A Record Year for EV Growth
The electric vehicle (EV) revolution is well underway in the UK. In 2025, over 750,000 EVs were registered in the first half of the year — a 28% increase compared to 2024. With over 2.5 million EVs now on UK roads, the transition from petrol and diesel is firmly in motion.
Helping to drive this change is the rollout of the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate, which requires manufacturers to ensure that 80% of cars sold by 2030 are electric — with penalties for non-compliance.
Charging Infrastructure Expands Rapidly
To meet rising demand, the government and private sector have installed over 50,000 new EV charge points in 2025, bringing the national total to more than 150,000.
Ultra-rapid chargers are being installed along motorways, while local authorities have focused on kerbside and lamppost charging in urban areas. Rural charging accessibility has also improved through targeted funding.
The EV Charging Infrastructure Investment Fund (ECIIF), launched in partnership with pension providers, has mobilised £1.2 billion for public and workplace charging hubs.
Green Fleets and Public Transport
Major delivery firms, supermarkets, and councils are transitioning their fleets to electric. Royal Mail, for example, now operates the largest electric fleet in the country, with over 10,000 EVs.
Electric buses are rolling out in London, Manchester, and Cardiff — improving air quality, lowering noise pollution, and reducing operational costs.
Second-Hand Market Boom
The used EV market has exploded, thanks to increased supply and better battery technology. Prices are falling, and buyers are benefiting from low operating costs, zero road tax, and government grants on home chargers.
A Cleaner, Quieter, Smarter Transport System
The UK’s EV transition is reshaping not only the car market but the entire urban experience — reducing noise, improving air quality, and driving innovation in battery and grid integration. In 2025, transport is no longer the problem — it’s part of the climate solution.
