A groundbreaking new initiative aims to supercharge the UK’s offshore wind industry while supporting communities that need it most. The Clean Industry Bonus (CIB) scheme has officially launched, offering financial incentives to developers who prioritize investment in regions historically reliant on oil and gas.
This strategic funding is designed to create highly skilled jobs—including engineers, electricians, and welders—while accelerating the shift to a greener economy. Developers will also be rewarded for building low-carbon factories and increasing local production of offshore wind blades, cables, and ports, helping to cut industrial emissions across the supply chain.
Under the scheme, offshore wind projects will receive £27 million per gigawatt of capacity. If developers commit to between 7GW and 8GW, the total available funding could reach £200 million, driving massive private sector investment into clean energy infrastructure.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband hailed the initiative as a game-changer, stating:
“We are backing our proud manufacturing, coastal, and oil and gas communities with good jobs, skills, and private sector investment—delivering on the government’s Plan for Change. This is our clean energy superpower mission in action, kickstarting growth, ensuring energy security, and transforming towns and cities—from the ports of Nigg and Leith to the manufacturing hubs of Blyth and Hull.”
The CIB application window closes on April 14, 2025, giving developers a limited time to seize this opportunity to power the UK’s clean energy future.
